01 Feb New Release: 2016 Helmsman
Naming wines can be a tricky business. The inspiration for Sacred Hill’s Helmsman struck as Black Magic crossed the finish line in their legendary defence way back in 1995. We knew we had finally found a name with pride and passion, that truly matched the wine. Since then, Helmsman has commanded attention in New Zealand and overseas.
Creating one of New Zealand’s most iconic wines requires a steady hand on the helm. The 2016 vintage was a roller coaster ride, with erratic weather, a cool early summer, and a blistering February. Conditions to challenge both world class sailors and wine makers. Luckily, March and April were smooth sailing, culminating in a very successful harvest.
This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc from our Deerstalkers Vineyard, Gimblett Gravels, would pair well with tender lamb rump and offer excellent cellaring potential of 10+ years. To make the experience even more special, we would suggest decanting this wine for at least half an hour prior to enjoying.
Andrew Caillard MW awarded the 2016 Helmsman 97 Points and commented:
“Medium deep crimson. Lovely intense mulberry, strawberry jam, cassis aromas accompanied with integrated dukkah, roasted chestnut oak. Inky and supple with gorgeous mulberry, cassis, strawberry fruits, fine plentiful chalky, slightly al dente tannins and superb oak complexity. Finishes chalky firm, even slightly assertive, with inky, cassis notes. A lovely combination between richness and vigour.”
