14 Jul “Shotgun” Chardonnay returns
The Hawke’s Bay Wine Auction celebrates 29 years of bringing together Hawke’s Bay’s top winemakers to offer unique auction lots for the benefit of Cranford Hospice. Sacred Hill are proud to support this amazing event, once again.
This year’s auction lot is a hand-crafted blend of Chardonnay from our iconic Riflemans Vineyard. This quarter barrique (56 litres) of 2019 Shotgun Chardonnay is an exclusive blend of hand-picked, old vine Mendoza fruit. Barrel fermented with indigenous yeast in new and one-year old French oak barriques and aged for 12 months on lees to create a rich and complex Chardonnay with layers of flavour and an intense finish.
Shotgun Chardonnay pays homage to the working title of our first, premium chardonnay that would later be known as Riflemans. “Shotgun Chardonnay” was humorously chalked on the barrels back in 1994, when most of the harvest was spent brandishing shotguns to keep hungry birds away from the precious fruit.
The Hawke’s Bay Wine Auction continues to raise the bar year after year and the success of this event allows all proceeds to be donated to Cranford Hospice.
